I’m pulling for my birthday, Valentine’s Day! Stacy is on bed-rest, after going into labor a little early, but she has made it to the 36 week point, so we are all hoping that she is in the clear of having to stay in the NICU.  I went up to visit them, and brought my camera along to just snap a few photos in their home. These were all taken at night with an off camera flash, and a paper backdrop, so I’m pretty proud, because natural light is definitely my forte. We just kept it real simple, and got a handful of shots that document this special time for them. And you know what I realized keeping it simple, is just my style! I love it.

Mr. Quinn is all of 2.5 weeks old, and I have already taken over 1,000 pictures of him! :) My dear nephew belongs to my one and only sister, Nicole, my brother-in-law Mike, and my adorable niece, Ava.  I know it’s hard to imagine the capacity of love one feels for their own children until you have them, but the love I feel for my niece and nephew is so big, and has grown my heart.

Sometimes people say, “I wish you were my kids aunt!” Mostly because of the free photo shoots, lol :) It’s quite funny to me, because I know being my sister is not all gravy. Despite my faults, Nicole and Mike have given me a gift I can never repay them. I got to watch both Ava and Quinn come into this world, and they trust me to take care of them, and play a part in helping to raise their beautiful children. It’s an amazing responsibility, that I do not take lightly.  I’m not always perfect, I once taught Ava the words to “Ice, Ice , baby” and most recently “Jump Over the cracks, so you don’t break your momma’s back” but it’s all in good fun :)

Here are just a few of my favorites from our several mini photo sessions:

I saw this idea on Pinterest, come follow me their if you’d like! I thought it was such a cute idea, and I think I’ll keep the name tags in my bag in case anyone else wants to do this. I try not to come empty handed for miss Ava. Yes, I spoil her :) I made her a special heart shape cookie on this day.
Quinn is always smiling, he made it easy for me to catch one. Love this little teddy bear :) We tried out every hat I had in my bag :) such a kissable little face. We knew he had the most perfect lips since he was in Nicole’s belly. He was showing them off in the ultrasound!

Proud daddy ♥We’re still working on getting the perfect shot of these two together, but I’ll take this any day. Ava girl is so sweet with her little brother ♥this girl… cannot take a bad picture. That smile and twinkle in her eye gets me every time.

I’ve been looking forward to sharing last week’s engagement session on the blog. We happen to shoot on the one day we actually had an accumulation of snow, yah! Call me crazy, but if it’s going to be cold and grey, I’d rather have snow on the ground… great for pictures, and for playing!

Katie+Adam are so sweet together.  You can tell they just have something special that makes them work.  We shot around Adam’s parent’s home, which just happens to be a pretty farm with old barns and lots of fun ‘photo props’. On to the pictures….

Sometime right before Christmas I hit a little bit of a breaking point… I had taken on to much to get done before the holidays, and the pressure was getting to me. I buckled down and finished my to-do list, and then I turned my brain off, stayed away from the internet and social media, watched a little too much old TV on Netflix, and stayed in my sweats whenever possible.  Maybe a little to much info for you all, but I’m just keeping it real :) The past couple of weeks I’ve been thinking long and hard about where I want my photography to go, and coming up with a plan to be successful and ORGANIZED this year. I have a few goals I plan to focus on, and look forward to sharing them with you in due time.

One project I started in ’11 and plan to focus on  is called ‘Beloved’. It’s a style of photography I adore, and hope to embrace it in every session I take on. It’s all about documenting love and true emotion, less posing.  This session with Mike and Kyle is a glimpse of that style, as well as, learning and practicing some new lighting techniques.  If you’ve been around awhile you’ll recognize these two; they were one of my very first weddings.  They are just an adorable couple, and I was so excited to get to work with them once again.

We shot around the Eastern Market in Detroit, we were all out of our comfort zones a little, but I love the bright colors, and urban feel. What do you think? Anyone want to travel to the D this year for a fun shoot?

This was an anniversary gift for Cindy and Jim from their kids, and I was really excited to work with them. Cindy has always been so supportive of my photography, and she is just one of those women that light up a room. Here’s the Durocher family.

Sure, I can shoot one more session, squeeze one more in.  I LOVE SHOOTING, don’t get me wrong, but if I’ve learned anything this fall is that shooting is easier than editing, posting, and giving people a timely, custom photography experience. The behind the scenes, after the shoot process is what is time consuming. I’m not complaining, in fact  I love the processing almost as much, and this post is about saying yes.  This is one of those occasions where I knew I had a full weekend, but when these guys contacted me about an engagement session I just had to fit it in.  Engagement sessions, or just couples in love are one of my most favorite things to shoot, and I’ll do anything I can to fit them in.  I’m so happy I said yes to this shoot, or more importantly, that Tori said “yes” to Derek at the bighouse on the big screen. YEP, Derek proposed at a Michigan game…. LOVE IT!

These two are so cute! And as you’ll see Tori came up with some awesome ideas for their shoot. They are planning a longer engagement, but I can only hope that I’ll be photographing their barn wedding in a couple of years!

LOVE THIS x’s a million :)  ♥♥♥Gorgeous couple:The bokeh and softness of this photo makes it one of my all-time favorites.Tori you are stunning ♥Another fave for me:So when they were telling me about their style and wedding, I thought we should head over to the botanical gardens for the 2nd half of our session. I knew there was a little more color on the trees, and a cabin that would fit their style. When we arrived, there were two deer (which I’ve never seen at TBG) really close to the parking lot, and Tori’s mom suggested getting them in a shot. I kind of giggled, because I thought for sure we couldn’t get very close to them, and they would run off, sure enough they stuck around, and we captured the moment. Marlo, great idea!
Seriously could these guys be any cuter together? Love this whole series:I may be the only photographer that thinks this tree looks like it has a little seat built into it, but I sure do adore this picture. I call it the Rapunzel pose, my niece would be so proud :) Just having a little fun: And last but not least,  we had to incorporate U of M, since they are both fanatics and it played such a big part in their engagement. Tori + Derek: Thank you so much for going along with my crazy ideas. I love their website, tutorials, and contests. It is a perfect way to breakup my work flow a little bit. This weeks theme, Laughter, or busting a gut, results in my most favorite images. This is from a session last week. Loved this family, and this little guy playing with his dad. I’m missing this blue Michigan sky this week, but I’m getting lots of editing done on these rainy days.

It’s hard to feel like I had a successful session if I don’t get at least a few frames of laughter. I personally think we are all prettier when we’re laughing :)
